A care home is expected to close in order to be transformed into three large family homes.

A planning application submitted to the council is seeking permission to convert Springfields Nursing Home in Langdale Road in Hove into one five-bedroom house, a six-bedroom and a seven-bedroom house.

Up to 25 residents could be forced to find new lodgings after owners Vig Care said the home was no longer financially viable and have applied to Brighton and Hove City Council for permission to change the use of the home.

Brighton-based Lewes and Planning Co Ltd state in the application that the nursing home is open but is “trading at a loss” and is “unable to upgrade to Care Quality Commission requirements”.

The application also states that the home, which is run by Joginder and Beant Vig, cannot operate profitably and closure is “inevitable”.

Documents included in the application show that the home made a loss of just under £4,000 between October and November last year, which would equate to a £48,000 annual operating loss.

The last Care Quality Commission inspection back in July said the home met the standards of care expected.

A final decision on the proposal is expected near the end of next month.
