Dozens of firefighters tackled a blaze in a large waterside warehouse.

Five fire crews attended an incident in a 50 metres by 40 metres warehouse owned by Sussex Skips in the North Quay at Newhaven Harbour which started at just before 5.30pm yesterday (Monday).

The blaze is believed to have begun within 100 cubic metres of recycle materials and there is no indication at this stage how the fire began.

As far as firefighters know, there was no one in the one-storey building at the time and no one has required rescuing.

Crews from Newhaven, Seaford, Roedean and Preston Circus were called to the scene, drawing water from the harbour as well as using an aerial ladder platform.

A spokeswoman from East Sussex Fire and Rescue said: "Crews were called at around 5.30pm and had to access the port to get into the open water as the water pressure wasn't good enough.

"We left the scene in the early hours. Fire investigation is continuing this afternoon (Tuesday)."
