A container full to the brim with donated school supplies bound for Africa was shipped out from The Argus warehouse.

The Fonthill Foundation filled the giant 40ft shipping container with recycled furniture, books and stationery before it was sealed and sent on its way to Ngorongoro region of Tanzania.

The Argus donated warehouse space to the charity for them gather donations and pack the container.

The volunteers, including students from City College Brighton and Hove, worked to prepare the goods for shipping.

The container is the second to be shipped out as part of the Fonthill Foundation’s Contain a School scheme – which is designed to fully equip a school and make a difference to children’s lives.

The charity launched the scheme and sent their first container in 2011.

Andrew Goodall, chairman of Fonthill Foundation, said: “Having seen what an enormous impact the first Contain a School container and its contents has had on the lives of the children and their exam marks in Lumo Medium School, the foundation was determined to find a way to repeat this success.

“In the UK we have so much serviceable equipment and technology which is of no further use in the UK but it can transform the educational experience and outcome in other communities around the world.”

The contents of the lorry will be shared between Tanzanian schools Wasso, Loliondo and Lumo Primaries, and St Joseph’s Teacher Training College.

The charity itself will be used by Wasso Primary to store grain which helps feed the children who have walked two hours to school without breakfast.

The container campaign was also supported by Pickfords Removals – which provided the trucks to ship in donations from across the county.

Argus readers can get involved with the Contain a School project.

The charity asks for donations of any children’s books, especially nursery age picture books, for the next container.

Bring them to the charity’s collection point at the Brighton Marina Security Office, which is on the boardwalk opposite the West Quay pub.
