Eagles and albatrosses could return to a seafront site after plans were revealed to bring a pitch and putt course back to life.

Mini Golf South East has applied for permission to reopen the Kingsway pitch and putt golf course in Hove in time for the summer.

The owners of the Splash Point course in Worthing are also hopeful of creating an 18-hole mini golf course on the site in time for next summer.

The Worthing course in Denton Gardens is currently home to the British Minigolf Association British Masters title and Mini Golf South East director Anthony Pope is confident that the newly proposed course could play host to a similar top-quality competition.

The company has been running the Worthing course for the past four years and now Brighton born and bred Mr Pope is looking to repeat the success closer to home.

The Hove course has been unused for more than 18 months and in February 2013 was the scene of the brutal killing of homeless man Lea Williams who was battered to death with a seafront railing.

Now the site could be looking to a brighter future if Brighton and Hove City Council gives the plans the go ahead with a decision expected in the first week of June.

A 2.2m “tennis court style” fence will be constructed around the proposed mini-golf site to keep it secure out-of-hours while the appearance of the course will be given a dash of colour with the proposed planting of wild flowers.

The applicants say the course will be fully wheelchair accessible and will be staffed by three part-time employees.

Mr Pope said: “The whole area around Hove Lagoon has become quite popular with families who want to come down and use the seafront and there is a nice collection of attractions already down there which we think we can add to.

“Subject to planning permission we would like to get that up and running as soon as possible but the mini golf will maybe be next year as we might have missed the window for this summer and there is little point in starting building in November.”
