Riot police have raided a Brighton squat in Choccywoccydoodah's empty Duke Street shop after a man was found with head injuries this morning,

Officers armed with shields moved into the squat in Duke Street at about 10am this morning.

The injured man was spotted wandering along the same road shortly before 9am and found by officers at the bottom of North Street.

A police spokesman said: "He appears to have a cut to his ear and bruising.

"Officers then went to a squat in Duke Street where they arrested a man on suspicion of assault. Other squatters were leaving the premises.

"There are no reports of other injuries. The investigation is at an early stage and no other information is immediately available."

Two more people have since been arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to three.

Beckie Eaves, who works at Rituals Health and Beauty told the Argus more than 30 squatters were seen leaving the empty shop with police - one of whom had a young labrador puppy.

She said there were lots of police dogs, and at least 20 officers.

One of the squatters, George Justice, said they had broken in about two weeks ago and were respecting the place.

He said two days ago, two new squatters came and threw a party and "ruined it for everyone".

Just wait for the squeals of 'Police brutality' and 'Heavy handed tactics'.
A very firm, but fair hand and the rule of law should be shown to these social leeches, so there is no misunderstanding that they are not welcome in our city.

Riot Police? RIOT POLICE???? So was there a riot then? No. Come on Argus, please start acting responsibly (yeah right, as if) and stop sensationalising everything, You used to be a quality paper (once) and now you're just as bad as the sleazy tabloids.

What probably happened was the that the Police didn't know what they might be confronted with, so turned up in numbers with protective gear for their own safety, so as to control any potential incident which may otherwise also pose a risk to the nearby public. Not quite a riot really is it?

And while we're at it. Boo hoo - a couple of squatters spoilt it for everyone.
Ha Ha Ha Ha. That is how the rest of us feel about the actions of these freeloaders in general.

I've always wondered why we can't just put them in a coach and take them out in the country or somewhere like newhaven and just turf them out-the chances are after a few times they won't come back..actually forget about Newhaven they will defiantly return.

Why would a Police Officer be so irresponsible as to bring a labrador puppy to a riot situation?

From the story, it appears to have taken around an hour to organize this from the time the injured party was found until the raid- THAT doesn't strike me as any more likely either. This was pre-planned.

It looks like it was a bit of over "policing " Riot police yes but if you recall the squat at London road where Freddies now is situated that got very VERY nasty with protesters out on the rooftops . i applaud the police for moving in . the Body discovered is a sad result of the current lack of available low cost housing...LETS JUST be aware of the squatting laws to they were clearly in the property illegally . just like the travelers that invade our lovely open spaces frequently and yet the police never seem to be there in any evidence moving the traveling community away

Peaceful law abiding people? Since when? I thought the crime of breaking and entering empty property was now against the law. And so it should be, especially as the squatters so often leave the property (or are made to leave the property) in a very dilapidate state. As for Caroline Lucas, if she is so concerned about their welfare, she could accommodate them in her own home.

There is no mention of her saying anything whatsoever in the article, why attack her over something she hasn't been involved with.
