The foul stench of raw sewage is still making life a misery for residents in a quiet Shoreham street.

People living in St Giles Close were given an unpleasant Easter Sunday present when they woke up and discovered sewage out- side their front doors.

A blocked drain or manhole caused a garage area outside homes to flood with sewage, but because of the bank holiday there was a delay clearing the mess.

After working to clear the area, residents were told by Southern Water’s workmen they would be back to finish the job, but five days on the residents are still waiting.

Resident Alison Tough, 44, said: “All the neighbours are so angry – it absolutely stinks. “And not only that, but one of my neighbour’s walls is about to fall down. It’s only a matter of time until somebody is hurt.

“The poor girl down the road has only just moved in and this is what she’s greeted with.

“I spoke to the men who were working on the pipes and they told me it all had to be dug up and repaired.

“They told me they’d be back on Wednesday, but nobody showed up. “I called Southern Water, gave them the job reference number, and they told me that job has been completed.”

On Monday contractors used a heavy jet spray to try to clear the sewer of any blockages and also carried out an inspection of the pipe to check for defects.

Mrs Tough’s mother Pat, 71, who also lives in St Giles Close, said: “It rained on Wednesday night and we were really worried it would be a repeat of the Easter Sunday downpour. Luckily it wasn’t heavy.

“But it’s forecast to rain again on Saturday. If we get another big downpour we could be in trouble.”

A Southern Water spokeswoman said: “This problem has been caused by a partial sewer collapse and we will be returning soon to make the repair. “We’re sorry if customers have received conflicting information.”
