Plans for 20mph in Worthing

The Argus: Plans for 20mph in Worthing Plans for 20mph in Worthing

Views are being sought on the possible introduction of a 20mph limit on residential streets in Worthing.

West Sussex County Council has begun the first stage of their consultation into the plans.

A letter will be posted to households and business in the town, asking them to tick a “yes”or “no” box.

The responses will influence decision-makers on whether to take the plans forward.

The deadline for responses is July 31.

A public meeting has also been set for May 27 between 6pm and 7.30pm at Worthing Library Lecture Theatre, Richmond Road.

Tickets will be available at Worthing Library reception from May 6 and limited to two per person.

Paul High, chairman of the Worthing county local committee, said: “We must decide if more time and money should be committed towards investigating a 20mph limit in greater detail.”

As anyone who has ever driven in Worthing knows, there are already substantial numbers of traffic calming measures in place which slow traffic down to well below 20mph anyway. We call them "potholes."

If only the Council would devote the same amount of time and effort into repairing the permanent way as they do about debating (probably unenforceable) speed limits we would all be a lot happier. Apart from the people who fix broken suspensions and blown tyres, anyway.

As if this will work.
I work in Brighton and when there is no build up of traffic, no one sticks to 20 mph.
So Worthing council, don't waste your money in making new signs or road painting 20 mph everywhere and FIX our current roads.

West Sussex County Council, Don’t waste the money. From my own experience 20MPH made traffic fumes and congestion worse in Brighton and it will make it worse in Worthing.
