The body of a tourist who went missing following a night out in the Dutch city of Leiden has been recovered from a canal.

Wayne Davies, went missing after leaving the Hifi nightclub in Leiden, in the west of the Netherlands, in the early hours of April 19.

His mother raised the alarm the next day as he was due to return to the UK .

The 22-year-old former City College Brighton and Hove pupil was in the Netherlands as part of a regular trip he and school friends used to take to Europe.

Friends of Mr Davies’ set up a Facebook group, Help Find Wayne Davies, which more than 600 people had joined yesterday.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We were notified of the death of a British national on 26 April in the Netherlands."

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."

Detectives believe that the apprentice plumber from East Grinstead could have fallen into the city's extensive network of canals and waterways.

His bank card had not been used since his disappearance, according to police.

Police divers and sniffer dogs have been used to try and locate him, according to local media reports.

Mr Davies had been staying in Leiden's Golden Tulip hotel with two friends.

He is said to have been wearing black trousers, a blue hooded top and blue trainers in the hours before he went missing.
