Brighton and Hove City Council is set to introduce parking controls in East Brighton Park.

Tonight councillors voted to approve the controls, subject to a consultation for Traffic Regulation Orders.

There are currently no parking restrictions in the park, which is located east of Kemptown along Wilson Avenue and is popular with residents.

But the lack of control has caused serious access problems, in particular for ambulances needing to transfer patients from the air ambulance and for coaches accessing the college and customers for the caravan site.

According to a survey carried out by officers in November last year 20% of vehicles were in the park for 7-12 hours.

As part of the new restrictions, parking charges will be introduced starting from 50p for up to an hour at the park up to £3 for 6 hours.

Adjacent on street charges will also be introduced starting at £1 for up to an hour rising to £5 for up to 11 hours.

The charges would apply from 9am to 4pm Monday-Friday and 2pm to 6pm on the weekend.

It is thought the scheme could raise as much as £12,000 a year and the costs of introducing it could be covered within three years.

Councillors have also agreed to restrict parking on Wilson Avenue with single yellow lines on the west side and double yellow lines on the east side.
