A record number of green-fingered gardening enthusiasts are poised to compete in Southern Water’s South East in Bloom competition this year.
So far 400 entrants have registered to take part in the competition that will culminate in awards presented at Brighton & Hove Albion’s American Express Community Stadium in September.
The Albion’s head groundsman Steve Winterburn welcomed Bloom chairman Peter Holman, celebrity gardener Chris Collins and Southern Water public affairs manager Andy Shaddick to the stadium this Monday to mark the launch of this year’s event.
Mr Winterburn said: “I’m full of admiration for those who volunteer and take such a pride in helping make their own part of the south and south east somewhere special to work, live and visit.”
Judging across the various Bloom categories will take place across June and July.
Peter Holman said: “We’re excited to have hit the 400 entry mark for the first time ever and it is particularly fitting in the year when the national competition everyone is ultimately striving to reach, Britain in Bloom, celebrates its 50th anniversary.
“The Amex is a super stadium and we are looking forward to Chris taking to the stage to present our trophies and certificates.”
