Dirty restaurant given zero hygiene rating

Rat droppings were discovered in the kitchen of a popular Chinese restaurant.

China Palace in Chapel Road, Worthing, has been given a lowly new hygiene rating of zero after health inspectors found the droppings.

The restaurant, which is famed in the town for its ‘all you can eat’ £15.80 buffet, previously boasted a rating of four out of five.

Manager Victor Hang initially told The Argus the reason for its new rating was because he could not provide inspectors with appropriate paperwork.

But it has since been revealed health bosses found rat droppings in cupboards and behind fridges at the restaurant’s kitchen on March 10.

Mr Hang said: “There was evidence of vermin, yes. There were holes in some doors on the ground level where they must have got in and gone up the stairs.

“They found droppings in the kitchen, behind fridges. But it was not obvious and we are very disappointed it happened. We got in pest control straight away and have fixed the problem.

“They also marked us down because on the night they came they asked to see paperwork, but I wasn’t present. I keep all the paperwork in an office only I had access to. I told them I could show them the next day but they said if I didn’t come back that night then they would score us without it. I couldn’t get back because I was miles away.

“The only other points brought up were flaky paint on the ceilings and normal things like that.”

Mr Hang said he was appealing the decision and it was “unfair” the restaurant had to live with its new rating for months before inspectors returned.

He added: “Inspectors said they can’t come back for three months, which means our customers are asking questions and getting concerned.

“It’s a false system and quite unfair.

“They’re only down the road but now we have to live with this new rating for three months.”

In January this year the restaurant hit national headlines after a diner tried to flee the restaurant without paying. He had to be rescued from a roof after he got stuck trying to escape via a balcony.

A spokeswoman from Worthing Borough Council said: “Our Environmental Health inspectors inspected the China Palace the day after the inspection and found they had cleaned up and employed a pest contractor.

“They have also undertaken works to prevent all vermin from entering the property. We are monitoring them closely to ensure that standards don’t slip.”

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme enables customers to make an informed choice as to whether they're going to eat in a clinically clean or unwholesome food establishment. Zero-rated establishments really should be closed for public health safety, until they can show that they can comply with the law.

I went here a while ago but wouldn't go back...
It wasn't because of the dilapidated 70s style peeling décor with strange "The Shining" type stains running down it. It wasn't due to the foul stench of sickly rotten egg, or the sticky floors. It wasn't the staff's seemingly pre-school grasp of English grammar, or even the rat dropping outside.

Ok, actually it was due to all of those things.

I wonder if "all you can eat" includes rat droppings. Mr Hang (great name that!) says it is a false system and unfair. Unfair to whom? Certainly not to the clientele suffering from food poisoning. The place should be closed down immediately.

I do agree this seems rather unfair. Mice droppings? Please tell me which restaurant does not having rats? They all have them, it is just down to pure luck whether you get caught on the day of inspection.

I have been there quite a few times with friends and families. We have always had a great time there. The food is authentic and delicious. The place is always clean!! We have been to restaurants which are dirty with sticky carpet and worst of all dirty toilets, and they have hygiene rating of 5!!! So how could this be a fair system.

We visited the restaurant again only a few days ago and it was so quiet! We had even better food and service! Who cares about the zero rating!! You need to judge it with your own eyes and mouth and take these ratings with a pinch of salt. I will have no problem going there again and would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have good food!

I hope that the local people see sense and continue to go there and give support to this wonderful local restaurant. Otherwise it might close down and we will never to be able to have authentic Chinese food!! BTW I love the DimSum there is one of the best I have tried, if you have never had dimsum there, I would recommend China Palace, you won't be disappointed.

I've said before that I think all restaurants should have a resident cat that is a good mouser/ratter. That would solve these problems. Far as I know a cat wouldn't be considered a health hazard unlike the vermin that currently roam a lot of these kitchens.

written like a member of staff or even its owner ,in the near 30 years i ran kitchens i have never had rat or mice droppings ,poor hygiene is a sign of a lack of care for there customers and would be a sign of poor food hygiene i will be keeping away form the place both now and in the future
