Plans to ban coaches and heavy goods vehicles from parts of Roedean have been approved.

The move comes following a petition by residents who had become annoyed with large vehicles parking in residential areas, blocking the road and causing congestion.

Among the recommendations that were approved by councillors was the introduction of a traffic regulation order banning heavy goods vehicles and public service vehicles except for access in The Cliff, Cliff Approach, Roedean Crescent, Roedean Way, Roedean Vale and Roedean Heights.

Conservative councillor Graham Cox said: “I know it's very easy to be cynical about these petitions but this is a very responsible campaign. Residents don't want to see coaches parked in Roedean but there's no long term solution.”

He added it was inappropriate for large vehicles to be parking in residential streets but said he was pleased the council had come up with a pragmatic solution.

Labour's Alan Robins added: “I've seen the pictures and read the report and it's obviously a problem of great significance but I do worry it could set a precedence with people saying we've banned vehicles in Roedean so why don't we do it here.”

But Green councillor Ollie Sykes raised concerns about how the scheme would be enforced.

It was agreed to introduce a four hour tariff at the Madeira coach parking facility, which currently charges £15 to park all day and provides room for 42 coaches.

If no objections are received about the introduction of the TRO then the enforcement could be in place by June.
