The last two flying Lancaster bombers in the world will appear in the air together at the Shoreham Airshow this year.

The two warplanes will approach with an escort of WW2 fighter planes for a 15-minute full display over the airfield.

Spokesman for Shoreham Airshow John Periam said this would “never, ever happen again in our lifetime”.

He said: “It's a unique opportunity to see two of these aircraft together- it will be emotional for a lot people.”

One of the WW2 warplanes, of RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, has often appeared at Shoreham Airshow in the past.

The other is flying over from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Ontario for a display tour of the UK.

Museum CEO Sqn Ldr (Ret) Dave Rohrer C.D, who will be among the air crew of the Canadian Lancaster, said: “A rare window of opportunity was identified to bring the last two flying Lancasters in the world together as a special salute to all the veterans of Bomber Command, many of whom are in their late 80s or older now.”

He added that for both aircraft to fly in formation will be a tribute to all those that served in the war from Canada, Britain and the entire Commonwealth.

Shoreham Airshow flying display director Rod Dean said: “Our first display ever was the BBMF Lancaster. Here we are 25 years later with two of them. What more could you ask for?”

Over 60 aircraft will be taking part in displays, some flying in from other airfields, for up to six hours on August 30 and 31.

A highlight will be the “attack and scramble” display which this year will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of D-Day, featuring Spitfires, Hurricanes and US Dakotas.

Vice-chairman of Shoreham Airport Owners and Operators Association David Skertchly said: “It is a sobering thought that a private pilot who trains at Shoreham will have more experience than the pilots of these aircraft when they set off in the dark to Germany. These were men of steel and these two amazing aircraft are an enduring tribute to their talent and bravery.”
