A widow is mourning the loss of treasured rings after they were stolen by an intruder.

The thief struck when the 92-year-old victim was preparing lunch in the kitchen of her flat in Taddington Road, Eastbourne.

Five rings were taken from a table, including engagement, wedding and eternity rings.

The woman had owned the rings for more than 50 years.

Detective Constable Dave Styles said: “This was a despicable theft.

“The sentimental value of these rings is incalculable. They were all given to the victim by her late husband, who died 26 years ago, and it has left her heartbroken."

The incident happened at about 11.30am on May 20.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have noticed anything or anybody suspicious in Taddington Road on Tuesday to get in touch.

They would also like to hear from any dealer, jeweller or pawnbroker who may be offered the rings.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk, quoting serial 0552 of 20/5.
