Illegal rave now over

First published in News

An illegal rave held at a Sussex beauty spot over the weekend is now over.

A Sussex Police spokesman said there had been a noticeable decrease in party-goers from midnight and by 7am today just one car, which had broken down, remained at the scene.

At its height, an estimated 2,000 people were said to be at the event in Devil's Syke.

The spokesman said seven arrests were made: five for drugs offences, one for driving while unfit through drugs and one for failing to comply with a direction to leave the area, but there were no reports of disorder or injury.

Breath tests were also carried out on drivers leaving the beauty spot but no-one was arrested.

the spokesman said: "About 90% of the rubbish had been collected into bags and left at the site by those leaving, assisting collection by the landowner.

"During Sunday, police had set up road blocks to help prevent further people arriving and we believe this, together with social media messaging drawing attention to the road blocks, had an impact on numbers and on the event winding down earlier than might otherwise have been the case."

He said officers had reassured residents action was being taken to minimise the impact on them and that police were looking into the organisation of the rave to see if any offences had been committed.

He continued: "Officers were on the site during the day and the gathering was good-humoured but very noisy.

"Although there are powers available to the police to close down illegal gatherings such as this, before exercising these powers an assessment has to be undertaken to determine whether or not such a gathering can be closed down safely and effectively.

"The assessment was that it would not be possible or safe to close the event down, given the number of police officers available, but a police presence at the location was maintained and active measures were taken to seek to prevent it escalating further."

Chief Superintendent Wayne Jones said: "These raves can cause a huge amount of disruption to local residents and damage to the land.

"Where we can, we will attend a report at the earliest opportunity to try to bring it to a safe conclusion.

"When a large number of people are already at the site it is not always possible for us to shut down the rave safely with the police resources available at that time.

"However we will always take action to contain the event, to reassure local residents, and work with partners, such as the National Trust in this case, to minimise the impact."

I wish I still had it in me for a rave, I remember the all nighters at Blackrock, Powerstation or Brighton Racecourse! Happy days!
As long as people cleared up and no damage that's fine by me...! If the travellers are allowed to pitch down at Waterhall and the cyclists causing mayhem up and down the Beacon then let the partygoers have a party! ๐Ÿ˜ป

People whinging about insignificant things like this is just another sad indication of the REAL hypocrisy of the vast majority of residents of this supposedly "liberal and tolerant" part of the country. (I wonder how many of you secretly voted Ukip Thursday?). What about the illegal sexual activity that "allegedly" occurs up there on a nightly basis? I guess its o.k to go dogging up there, but you cant play music and dance? Really? A bunch of kids just trying to have a good time at the weekend, but because it's on your doorstep, it's a problem? And what of the mess left on the beach after EVERY summer weekend? I guess empty pinot grigio bottles and waitrose burger wrappers from organic BBQs are o.k too? Seriously, I've never lived in, nor been to, a more pretentious and hypocritical place in all my life! My days, i've heard talk of the army and tear gas being used. And what if that doesn't work? What shall we do with these master criminals and enemies of the state? Send them off to concentration camps? Or just keep whinging about Sussex police, a bunch of kids and a PCC you voted for?

Let the community service boys and girls clear it up then. When nearly 75, 000 revellers descended on Brighton beach a few years ago for Fatboy there wasn't this much fuss and they trashed the beach!!! The bloody council leave our rubbish on the streets for well over a month in the sweltering heat and we still have to pay council tax. Kids can't use local Parks because Travellers put down roots where and when ever they like. It was a Bank Holiday and people wanted to have some fun. They may have turned a bit of grass to mud but it will grow back just like when the walkers trample all over the downs but you don't hear us non Downs walkers moaning.
Ps I'm not a hippy...I'm fat bald and Ugly!๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿ‘

Poor, bitter ZeeGee, his day has been ruined by Ukip's poor show in Brighton. Love's his country so much he spends 90% of the day sitting looking at the Argus website whinging about everything. Maybe he could spend his time more usefully volunteering at what used to be called St Dunstans? Though I think the ex-servicemen/women won't be impressed with his stories of going on marches with racists and neo-nazi's.

Despite warnings in good time to the Police and NT the Travellers are never moved on within 24 hours from this area.

No Police available ... too high a cost. But not for the Helicopter at 3000 plus per hour.

No one would bother too much if you didnt **** in the bushes and leave the site like a favella. NT Prosecute and impound the sound system.
