The oldest outdoor freshwater pool in the UK is open again and operators are ready for the summer with bumper opening hours.

Pells Pool in Brook Street, Lewes, has reopened its gates and in the first three days more than 1,000 visitors came to cool off and have fun.

Phil Ransley, pool manager, said: “It’s an amazing community asset – and to see the delight on people’s faces as they came in to enjoy the pool again was wonderful.

"Many families stay for the whole day, relaxing on the grass while children splash happily in the water.”

New features include soft flooring for the changing rooms, small
lockers for valuables and floats for people to use in the pool.

Mr Ransley said they are looking to invest in further improvements this year.

The spring-fed pool is open on weekdays from noon to 7pm from May to mid-September.

As of May 31 it will be opening from 10am every Saturday and Sunday.

Early morning swims are also being trialled on Tuesday and Thursdays, with a session from 7am to 9am on both days from June onwards.

Mr Ransley said: “We wanted to test the water, so to speak, and see if an early morning swim would be popular with people to start the day with a refreshing dip.”

All-day tickets are £4, £2 for under- 16s and concessions are available.
