Iconic Alfriston bridge to shut for repairs

First published in News

An iconic bridge will be shut during refurbishment.

East Sussex County Council and the South Downs National Park Authority are investing £45,000 into carrying out essential structural repair work on White Bridge in Alfriston.

The bridge, which crosses the River Cuckmere near Heathfield, is an important access point for residents and walkers.

Work is due to start on Monday and will last for about six weeks. It will involve replacing wooden decking and repainting the side rails and metal beams.

Wow, a bridge that spans from Alfriston to Heathfield. That's some engineering feat.

also know as "plonk" bridge a name which might be an apt sobriquet for the reporter who is not aware of this bridge running not to heathfeild but towards lullington some good few miles closer. incedentally the current reincarnation is from 2000, just 14 years old and its rotting already.
