A driver was punched repeatedly by a taxi dirver in a road rage attack.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened on May 23 in Orchard Street in Chichester.

The 68-year-old from Horsham was sitting in traffic in the road at 4.15pm when a taxi driver behind him tried to open his car door and then kicked off his wing mirror.

After the taxi driver returned to his vehicle the victim got out of his black Mercedes to photograph the damage to his car and to record the registration number.

As he did the man returned and repeatedly punched him.

The victim was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with minor head and neck injuries. The offender drove off.

PC Stu Bethan said: "The attacker was driving a maroon Hackney cab and we believe he had a customer in the back of his taxi while he was assaulting his victim.

"I am very keen to speak to that person as they may have seen the moments building up to the attack as well as the attack itself.

"I would also like to speak to anyone else who was in the area around Orchard Street on Friday and saw or heard the incident happening.

"If you know anything at all please contact me."

A 43-year-old man from Emsworth was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage and questioned before being released on bail until July 6.
