Driver punched repeatedly by taxi driver in Chichester road rage attack

The Argus: Driver punched repeatedly by taxi driver in road rage attack Driver punched repeatedly by taxi driver in road rage attack

A driver was punched repeatedly by a taxi dirver in a road rage attack.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened on May 23 in Orchard Street in Chichester.

The 68-year-old from Horsham was sitting in traffic in the road at 4.15pm when a taxi driver behind him tried to open his car door and then kicked off his wing mirror.

After the taxi driver returned to his vehicle the victim got out of his black Mercedes to photograph the damage to his car and to record the registration number.

As he did the man returned and repeatedly punched him.

The victim was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with minor head and neck injuries. The offender drove off.

PC Stu Bethan said: "The attacker was driving a maroon Hackney cab and we believe he had a customer in the back of his taxi while he was assaulting his victim.

"I am very keen to speak to that person as they may have seen the moments building up to the attack as well as the attack itself.

"I would also like to speak to anyone else who was in the area around Orchard Street on Friday and saw or heard the incident happening.

"If you know anything at all please contact me."

A 43-year-old man from Emsworth was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage and questioned before being released on bail until July 6.

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 1009 of 23/5, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Talking about taxi's why have some taxi drivers got SAT NAVs in there vehicles in Brighton and Hove I got a taxi from the pier to the king Alfred and the foreign driver took me at one stage to London road surely taxi drivers should have a local knowledge of the area.He tried to charge me £11 for a journey that normally costs a fiver at most.

no knowledge should mean no licence...but this is the country we live in now unfortunately. And there seem to be more taxis on the road than private cars now, not sure how they can all eek out a living!

So many people on here criticize others whose use of grammar and spelling are sometimes not correct. Does it really matter so much that others have to put these people down as a result? I know from experience too that many errors are just typos.

It's called Skitt's Law of Internet Discussions - a post correcting another's spelling and grammer will contain errers it'self. It's often seen here - along with Poe's Law - without any indication of the author's intent, a parody of extremism will be indistinguishable from the real thing (we get that a LOT). And of course good old Godwin's Law - in any internet discussion someone will inevtably make a comparison with Hitler and the Nazis (sometimes it's like Germany in the 30's on here!)

Depends if trade is busy:

If quiet, taxi drivers might take a longer route with a healthy amount of traffic lights. I've known experienced cabbies in Brighton & Hove who off the record laugh about it, admitting it's true.

On the other hand, an empty cab will race back to a rank or the next job, do the best they can on a direct route and not slowing down for lights going from green to amber. Strange that.

There is no excuse for the behaviour of the taxi driver, but we still do not know the cause of the "road rage" in the first place.
A few months ago I witnessed a row in East Street, Brighton, when a van driver was unable to get through, due to the large amount of taxis waiting around, blocking the road. He was justified in getting angry with them.
