A PUB raised more than £1,100 in one night for a hospice which supports people with terminal illnesses.

Staff at The Sussex Cricketer, Hove, presented a cheque to the St Peter and St James Hospice in North Chailey, Lewes.

The money was raised from donations at an event hosted by the pub with Brighton Beatles tribute band The Vox Beatles on April 26.

The event was organised by staff member Laura Dennington in memory of her stepfather Michael Bell who was cared for at the hospice. He died of lung cancer earlier this year, aged 51.

Miss Dennington, 29, from Hove, said: “It was a really lovely night, a big party. Michael was going to come to it but unfortunately he passed away a month before.”

About 150 people attended the event at which the tribute band played for free.

Kate Gibson, from the hospice’s fundraising team, said: “We need to generate £2.6 million this year in order to be able to deliver our services.

“Events like this are crucial to us and we are very grateful for the support.

“It’s very moving when people who have had loved ones use our services want to give something back.”

The hospice is organising a Sleep Walk around Haywards Heath on July 12 to pay for nursing and in-patient care.
