A man is being airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car.
Traffic has ground to a halt in Newhaven following the incident next to the Swing Bridge in South Way shortly after 2.30pm this afternoon.
Police are at the scene speaking to witnesses.
The air ambulance has taken the man, who is believed to be in his 20s, to hospital in London.
The Brighton bound side of the Newhaven Swing Bridge is closed. There are long delays in the surrounding area with traffic queuing back to the McDonalds roundabout.
Buses have also been diverted with routes 12 and 12A towards Brighton not calling in the centre of Newhaven. They are instead diverting from Denton Corner, along the A26 and A27 via Lewes.
