Cake creation will celebrate anniversary of tennis contest
A LUCKY winner will get to see her culinary creation come to life at the hands of a celebrated cake artist.
Barbara Manning won the anniversary cake competition for world class tennis tournament Aegon International’s 40th birthday.
Ms Manning, from Eastbourne, will get to see her design take shape courtesy of Lindfield-based Michelle Wibowo.
The competition challenged budding bakers to design a spectacular birthday cake to celebrate the Eastbourne tennis competition’s ruby anniversary.
Ms Manning said: “I am surprised and delighted to have won the ‘Happy Birthday Eastbourne’ cake competition and I’m really looking forward to seeing the cake unveiled at the Aegon International on June 18.
“One of the main reasons for my entry was the fact the cake will be sold off, and proceeds will go to the charities benefiting from the Rally for Bally exhibition match in memory of Elena Baltacha.
“I’m really pleased that the cake will raise money for charity as well as being a big part of the celebrations for such a historic Eastbourne sporting event.”
The renowned sugar artist Ms Wibowo has already sketched out her version of Ms Manning’s design – saying she is “very excited” to create it.
She said: “Barbara’s design was quite elaborate and I think best reflected the history of this prestigious tournament.
“I will be basing my final design on her idea and I plan to make a spectacular cake to fit this special occasion.
“I’ve created cakes for functions all over the world, and I’m proud to be making this cake for such an important event in my home county of Sussex.”
Ms Wibowo has previously made stunning cake creations such as busts of Andy Murray and The Queen.
The Aegon International takes place at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne, from June 14 to 21.
Pieces of the cake will be sold during the event for the Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis and the Royal Marsden cancer charity.
A charity exhibition match called The Rally for Bally will also be held on June 15 in memory of former British number one Elena Baltacha, who lost her battle with liver cancer on May 4, aged 30.
