WORLD Cup footballers, cricketers and First World War servicemen all inspired scarecrows at a festival over the weekend.

The 42 creations, courtesy of local groups, starred in the annual Cuckfield Scarecrow Festival.

Wendy Tracey-Roberts, the co-organiser, said: “The quality of the scarecrows this year has been fantastic.

“We didn’t get off to a good start on Saturday with the thunder but the weather across the rest of the weekend has been fantastic.”

Local groups, sports teams and schools delivered their scarecrows to the organisers on Friday evening before they were erected around a six-acre plot the following morning.

The public then walked the trail and enjoyed home-made cakes and refreshments before voting for their favourite.

The winner has not yet been announced.

All money from the event went to the St Peter and St James Hospice and the National Autistic Society.
