CAMPAIGNERS took to the streets to demonstrate against college cuts.
Staff and students at City College Brighton and Hove were protesting the second time in a month against cuts of £1.5 million to the college.
Dozens of people gathered at 12.30pm in Jubilee Square yesterday to protest against plans which could result in the potential loss of up to 55 full-time positions and several courses at the college in Pelham Street.
Dr Jon Gilhooley, UCU branch secretary, said: “If the management goes through with these cuts, we believe that it will decimate the future of education at City College.”
Amongst courses facing potential termination is a Foundation Degree in fine art. Students with learning disabilities will be especially affected.
Lynn Thackway, principal at City College, said: “Although we understand the position of UCU members in regards to proposed changes to staffing at the college and fully respect their right to strike, it’s regrettable that this strike is inconveniencing students at a crucial time in the academic year.”
