A MAN is ploughing length after length in his bid to swim the English Channel.

Alan Gale, of Nunnery Wood, Worcester, will swim the 21 miles from England to France to raise £10,000 for Acorns Children's Hospice, who cared for the 46-year-old's son Harry who died, aged just 10 months, in 2007.

With 12 weeks to go, Mr Gale's endurance effort has been boosted by his ability to hired a pilot and a boat to escort him across the stretch of water via the support of Kendall Wadley Chartered Accountants, who have offices in Worcester, Malvern and Hereford.

Kendall Wadley partner Jeremy Clarke-Morris said: “We have the utmost respect for Alan, and wanted to support him in a practical way, as well as via his fundraising.

“He will be swimming for at least 16 hours in water temperatures of around 16C, in one of the toughest physical and mental challenges he could set himself.

"Apparently it’s highly likely he will meet flotsam, oil, jellyfish, sewerage or even sharks and whales as he swims.”

If the swimmer retires, the boat returns them to the UK, and the swim is over and if the swimmer makes it across, they then board the boat and get brought back.
