COUNCIL leader Jason Kitcat will be standing down at the next election.

The Green leader of Brighton and Hove City Council will not run for relection in May next year, The Argus can confirm.

Coun Kitcat, who represents the Regency ward, will see out his tenure as leader of the council but will step down at the next round of local elections.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman confirmed his decision.

She said: "Brighton and Hove City Council Leader Jason Kitcat has announced that he will not be standing in the next local election. “Cllr Kitcat will continue as Leader of the Council until May 2015."

When contacted Coun Sue Shanks said she was “extremely surprised”.

But Coun Geoffrey Theobold, leader of the Conservative Party in Brighton and Hove, said he was not surprised when he was informed by The Argus.

“He may well have felt the that he may well not hold his place in the ward he is in.

“I think it’s interesting that as leader of the party he’s not going to lead them into the next election.

“Some of the policies he has put forward have not exactly endeared him to the electorate.”

Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour and Co-operative Group on the council, said more Green councillors will make the same decision.

He said: "Whilst personally I wish Jason Kitcat well in whatever he does next, I would remind everyone that he is remaining in office for another ten months, with another budget and many more vital decisions to make.

He added: "I know that many other Green councillors are not seeking re-election, so their days as a political force in the city are numbered.”

At least he has the humility to recognise that his ideology is at odds with what the city's majority of residents want and this was no surprise following his recent attempt to get elected as a Euro MP.
I understand Caroline is also considering standing in another constituency as she knows her chance of being re elected in the city is under threat due to the poor performance of the Green council.
Perhaps she will choose an area under threat of fracking as she knows her popularity has grown in some of those areas.
Bill Randall is also not standing again.
The dominos are falling.

Well, if JK has decided to stand down, then all the best to him. He has made a good fist of leading the council at the most difficult time in local government for a very long time.

Under his leadership, the council have become far more efficient, delivered many successful schemes, brought in big sums in investment into the city all against a backdrop of savage government grant cuts and a minority administration subject to sabotage by Labour and Conservatives that seek power at the expense of the interests of the city. The city is in a better place than before he and predecessor Bill Randall took office.

You just have to look at the comments of the Brighton and Hove haters in the Argus to see what thanks you get for being a councillor in this great city. A great shame.

Politicians, like crabs, cling to life by moving sideways. I don't think we've seen the last of him by any means. He'll just be moving on to some other bureaucratic position which is probably appointive, from which he'll be immune from voters' wrath.

After London Brighton/Hove is one of the most unequal cities in the western world.

A lot of people believe that's fine. Conservative, inward looking, these people will always resist positive change.

At last the man has made a correct decision , why oh why has he taken so long agonising over the fact that he really had no kudos (political or otherwise) with the majority of BH electorate . Such is the legacy of his down right limited local governmental knowledge that i find that we can all clean our Kit Kat Litter trays out knowing very soon they will smell fresh again.

You have to be joking Alison. The same Mary Mears that oversaw the decimation of youth services in the City. Let me know how that works out...

It is a shame that the loony projects introduced or attempted to be introduced by the Greens will not go with him, Illegally chopping down the trees in Wild Park, increasing parking fees by 300%, attempting to introduce illegal 'shooting galleries', their obsession with residents parking schemes, cycle and bus lanes, their in-house fighting over the bin strikes and last but not least Kitcat's Q&A session the other day where he suggests making urban spaces 'traveller friendly' areas'.

I hope he's going to sort out the mess he's left the city in before he goes. Like:
communal recycling bin sham, rubbish, traveller problem, roads, crumbling walkways.... or change the inner city speed limit again. That was good value for money!!

I doubt that he is going due to 'humility' as he's shown nothing but arrogance towards the very people who voted him into office, it is more likely that the reaction to his recent Q&A session about travellers where he blithely suggested that urban spaces on the edge of Brighton (presumably he meant Sheepcote Valley, 39 acres in Hollingdean and various parks) be classed as 'traveller friendly areas' where they could set up illegal camps without interference made him realise that if he didn't jump then he would be pushed.

No Job Seekers Allowance. That post has been reserved for Caroline.
No doubt the construction companies who have fared so well under the Greens with the contracts for building bus and cycle lanes will offer him a post, he's make a fairly decent tea boy on a building site.
