School crossing campaigners must wait

The Argus: Parents and children on Church Road Parents and children on Church Road

PARENTS campaigning for a school crossing have been told they must wait until October for a decision.

Martin Heath, road safety manager for Brighton and Hove City Council, attended a meeting at St Peter's Community Infant and Nursery School yesterday to explain the road safety team’s findings on the feasibility of a crossing on Church Road.

Parents, teachers and ward councillors have been campaigning since September 2013 for a crossing.

The council’s environment, transport and sustainability (ETS) committee, promised a report into their request would be discussed at a committee meeting in January.

But the deadline was missed because the council said further surveys and public consultation work was necessary.

Mr Heath told parents at the meeting yesterday that one location between the junctions with St Nicholas Road and Church Street met the criteria.

Residents and businesses will be consulted on the location before the matter is put to the committee in October.

Mr Heath said: “I don’t want to say to the community ‘This is what you can have’, what is better is to ask the community what it needs.”

Parent Rae Powers, who leads the campaign, said: “At this point the council can still deem it not a priority based on the findings, which I don't think accurately reflect the severity of the problem.”

Ward councillor for Portslade Alan Robins said: “It’s a nonsense – we are having a consultation then a consultation about the consultation.”
