Councillor slammed for "hired killers" Armed Forces Day tweet

First published in News

UPDATE: A councillor has apologised for tweeting: "Armed Forces Day has certainly brought the hired killers onto the streets of Brighton today".

Green Councillor Ben Duncan, who represents Queen's Park ward on Brighton and Hove City Council, sent the tweet yesterday while the city celebrated war heroes with Armed Forces Day.

Armed Forces Day has certainly brought the hired killers onto the streets of #Brighton today. Hard to explain to my son!

— Ben Duncan (@KemptownBen) June 28, 2014

The comment has provoked an angry response, with people calling for his resignation and labelling him "spineless".

And Green Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas called on the local party to take disciplinary action against Coun Duncan if he does not immediately apologise.

Ms Lucas also said she had spoken directly to Coun Duncan, and shortly after 11am, he took to Twitter again to apologise.

The original tweet has been retweeted by scores of other Twitter users, including the political blogger Guido Fawkes, who added:

Ben Duncan is an idiot of the highest order. He's unprofessional and quite frankly should be kicked out by the Green party. He's so stupid that he can't even answer emails challenging his pathetic tweets about RESIDENTS requesting CCTV in a local park to stop drug dealers. He guess he must support drug dealing and anti-social behaviour in the same way he supports the city being smashed by and police officers being assaulted by Smash EDO. He is a disgusting example of a human being who should be put down for his own and everybody elses sake. Strange how he doesn't respond to the Argus despite always being on Twitter and other social media.

I'm not a fan of this man, but please bear in mind that the Greens have done a good job in so far as they have kept Brighton and Hove a Tory free zone. I consider myself a Tory, except I am also mindful that in neighbouring Adur, Tim Loughton's abuse of privilege and process have been nothing short of embarrassing. But his seat is so safe, that only some proportional representation would show the stink that he has created. Given this, Ben Duncan is just ignorant and clumsy, while Tim Loughton's abuse is worse, in that it is personal, and shamelessly abuses institutions and processes that are meant to be there for the benefit of constituents; not for himself. Then there are the moot points that keep hanging around like stale f-a-r-t-s that Adur's councillors (and even the Police?) carry out their duties with cultural nepotism, because there is no effective opposition to challenge them.

I am a Tory, but I intend to vote Green, because the Tories need saving from themselves.

I can only express my utterly disgust about a tweet by Green Party Councillor Ben Duncan regarding the Armed Forces Day.
Of course one can disagree about the means and use of Armed Forces in a mature and honourable way. One definetly can discuss war crimes.
However the above mentioned tweet is absolutely disgraceful towards all British soldiers who fought to defend not only Britain. Most British will agree with me.
I am German by birth. My grandfather served in both wars in the German Marine. He was in charge of a smaller sister ship of the "Wilhelm Gustloff" at the end of the second world war, saving hundreds of fugitives. After the war and loosing 3 children during that awful time, thanks to the allies, especially the British forces, he was able to bring up the rest of his family peacefully and happy.
My family and I will always be grateful for the role, British soldiers had in liberating Germany from the Nazi Regime.
I grew up in politics, as my father was a leading Social Democrat in my home area.
As a Labour Candidate for Hollingdean and Stanmer in the upcoming council elections, I am utterly appalled by the continuously misbehaving of Councillor Ben Duncan. His tweet compliments perfectly his smoking cannabis and rape remark and the many other offensive or simply stupid comments, he posts or tweets. I am sure he will be asked to apologise again, but what is it worth. Am sure, he did not mean any of his frequent apologies so far. He constantly is bringing shame to the residents of Brighton and Hove, who he represents as a Councillor.
There is only one honourable way left for him to make any apology believable. The City does not need Councillors like him.

If enough people do, the Council will have to listen. Perhaps this could also be circulated via the Armed Forces on social media?

It was only the other week that Duncan was apologising for tweeting from a Council meeting about a Tory councillor supposedly wearing a Swastika motif on a necklace, which was completely wrong.

He was then ordered to apologise again, because his original apology for this wasn't regarded as 'sincere'. Then there were his previous ill-judged comments about rape.

Caroline Lucas should be demanding his immediate resignation. She is such a hypocrite. This isn't the first time that he's caused gross offence, and she knows it. How many chances does she want him to have?

This moron just keeps putting his ugly foot in things, doesn't he? I personally don't think an apology from that revolting specimen is worth hearing or reading as he will only apologise because he is told to, not because it comes from the heart. If he was really sorry he wouldn't say these stupid things in the first place. Clearly didn't learn his lesson when he insulted Mary Mears, whose policies I don't agree with but I don't doubt her integrity. (Integrity - look the word up, Duncan, I doubt you know what it means.) isn't it time someone confiscated his I.T. equipment so he had to stop tweeting?

I am a Tory, but I intend to vote Green, because the Tories need saving from themselves.
You're a Tory that votes Green ???? No, you're very confused.
I'm not confused. You didn't digest my post at all (only the last bit). Anyway, tribal politics seem to be history. Can you explain any other reason for there currently being a coalition government that has come about with an FPTP system? And please, if you showed a practical interest in the way that Adur District Council has been alleged to have been run, you'd eat your words for picking on any excuse to throw abuse at the Green Party in Brighton and Hove. Do you know where Adur is? It apparently covers the small towns of Southwick, Shoreham and Lancing, and borders Brighton and Hove to the west. It even has something in common with Brighton and Hove, in that while it is unable to call itself a city, it still has a pleasant seaside environment. All three towns have pleasant beaches that are adjacent to each neighbourhood. You should check out the area sometime.

Also completed. Ben Duncan needs removing and I will do everything to ensure it happens.

Let's just consider that statement for a moment...
This has been bugging me all day and not moving in political circles I was unsure exactly what a press officer did. So I looked it up.....
Here is the definition: "A press secretary or press officer is a senior advisor who provides advice on how to deal with the news media and, using news management techniques, helps their employer to maintain a positive public image and avoid negative media coverage."
Oops - me thinks MEP Ms Lambert may wish to rethink that particular appointment!
Seriously though MEPs receive an allowance so they can pay their support staff such as press officers. If Ms Lambert is paying Mr Duncan then it's another shocking example of the political gravy train that we all have to subsidise. What possible qualification does he have for a job as press officer?!
He should undoubtedly be sacked from that role. As for being a councillor? I think the electorate should have that particular honour next May.

The Labour Party wants a by-election out of Cllr Duncan's startling tweet. They should be careful what they wish for. Surely better to seek to win in 2015 while the public is still innocently unaware of Labour sins to come that will surely follow Green ones.

The violent spewings, viciousness and hatred on this comment trail are worse than Cllr Duncan's ill-expressed ruefulness about what he sees in a military parade. He might have done better saying something about jingoism instead to get it off his chest.

Some warring is to attain/preserve peace and we should be grateful for the "hired killers" deployed to that end. Sadly too many wars are not that honourable - like Tony Blair's Iraq. And perhaps Afghanistan too.

In the case of bad wars, who are the "hired killers?" The answer is the politicians who send people to their deaths or disability, their mental breakdowns and the rest in pursuit of power, oil or whatever.

There is a lot of "kill" in our highly adversarial political system that is forever viciously attacking the members of each other's parties.

How does that waste of time change things or improve servuces? It doesn't.

Ben Duncan's punishment should be to shut down blog and twitter accts and just do his jobs and look after his family.

I feel sick at the thought of Argus trolls with hidden identities also going out door to door seeking votes for their parties/candidates. How are any of you any better than Ben Duncan?

Sorry, Valerie, but while there may be some political posturing here by Labour, as I read the comments, they strike me as being from ordinary people who are genuinely and extremely offended - with reason - by yet another outrageous comment from Cllr Duncan. Check the petition too - there are already approximately 550 signatures demanding his resignation, with many equally heartfelt comments.

The man has repeatly demonstrated that he isn't fit to hold public office. This is not an isolated event as far as he is concerned, and even his fellow councillors think his apologies are worthless.

He needs to go - now. Whoever replaces him is actually irrelevant.

I've got 57 'thumbs down' for this so far. I think it is safe to say that there are 57 Argus readers out there who have s****d Tim Loughton's c**k. Tim Loughton is an insidious creep - Ben Duncan is just a mouthy idiot. Some of you guys on here seem to have a worse character than Ben Duncan's. Pot, kettle, black? You seem to think that his 'opinion' is a valid reason to come out of your 'anger closets'. You seem to be scummy, Sun reading Moulsecoomb losers. There is a new political party out there for you - I do believe it is called UKIP. Anyway, who does Ben Duncan think he is? Prince Philip? Ben Duncan might be scraping the barrel with his humour, but some of the bile that passes for opinion on here is scraping the sewer. It very very very very very very very very monotonous just scanning it.

YOU NEED people like Ben Duncan to make yourselves feel important. Who are you going to pick on next when he's gone? And let me put money on the next council being 18/18/18 Tory/Labour/Green or something similar. I wish that something similar in Adur were possible.

He is a nasty, bigoted bully who picks on people who won't fight back and he hides behind social media to do it and no party should tolerate this disgraceful behaviour.
Go away Mr Duncan you have done nothing for society except attempt to stir hatred and intolerance.
As for the electorate, this is what you get when you tick a box and fail to Google the candidates. Roll on 2015. Goodness knows what company would employ this bully.
Well, Tim Loughton is a bully who hides behind parliamentary privilege, and is a disgrace to the Tories. BUT HE HAS NO OPPOSITION.
