Bank tellers save 83-year-old woman from £2,500 fraud

First published in News

BANK staff managed to foil an attempted fraud on an 83-year-old woman.

Quick-thinking staff in a Hove bank alerted police after the woman from Portslade came in to ask for £2,500 in cash.

She had been told on the telephone that she needed urgent guttering and fascia board repairs to her home and would need to pay cash.

Officers attended her address and stopped a suspicious vehicle nearby, arresting both its occupants on suspicion of attempted fraud.

A 54-year-old man from Portslade-by-Sea and a 48-year-old man from Brighton were interviewed and released on bail until August 31while enquiries continue.

Sergeant Mark Collins, of Brighton's Neighbourhood Response Team, said: "We want to encourage everyone to continue to resist telephone calls like these, which look to exploit elderly and vulnerable people."

"If you ever doubt the credentials or intentions of anybody calling on you, or you get a suspicious phone call asking for bank details or instructing you to withdraw money, we urge you to contact police immediately. No genuine organisation would ever act in this way.

"If somebody is at your door, or if you believe somebody is on their way to your address expecting to collect money or bank details from you, call police on 999 immediately."

It`s a terrible crime however the Police arrested 2 INNOCENT men , their only `crime` that they were in the same area the `offence` took place. There is NO EVIDENCE to link these men to the 83 year old lady. These men are genuine trades-men NOT conning scumbags. While the men in question spent hours in police custody the real culprit/s are getting away with it. I hope the real villian/s will be caught asap

Hmm.....you seem to know a lot about this.

First off, where did the offence take place? It certainly didn't happen in the bank, because that's where many people withdraw cash.

No, the offence occurred when the lady was falsely told that repairs were needed. That was probably at her house.

If the arrested men were innocent, then why were they identified, and why were they arrested and bailed? If they had nothing to do with the offence, they would have been able to explain their presence at the scene and allowed to continue with their day.

The men in question haven`t been charged with this terrible crime - so cannot be named. The men were arrested because they were in the area near where the 83 year old lady lives on their way to a geniune job. The police have to be seen to be doing something but i can assure you they have the `wrong men`

The guy that rang the old lady to get her to part with her cash must be laughing even though he didn`t get the money, knowing 2 random men have been arrested for a crime he committed.. Their only crime driving a white van near to where the old lady lives and as there were tv camera`s there , the police wanted to look good that they had arrested somebody for the crime. The men in the van thought `it was some kind of joke` and that Jeremy Beadle was going to suddenly appear... .They have been told they can claim for `wrongful arrest`

the lady was contacted by telephone, numbers can be witheld from displaying but not from the system, simple detective work will work out where the call was made from & exactly when, if a mobile it can be trangulated as to its location at the time of the call, if these guys are innocent they will be quickly cleared. If you have ever wondered how to afford new vans and new expensive caravans whith which to travel round the south parking on any convinient bit of public space, this sort of scam sounds a variation of a familiar modus operandi
