BITS and bobs, bric-a-brac and all things Brighton will be on a sale at a very special vintage auction.

Andy Garth, owner of Brighton and Hove Stuff, and Robert Jeeves, of the Sussex Postcard Club and owner of Step Back In Time, have teamed up to invite anyone with any Brighton, Hove and Sussex themed memorabilia to come forward and try to grab themselves a pretty penny.

Mr Garth said they welcome anything with a nostalgic spin or that is “strange and wonderful”– whether it be vintage postcards, old photographs, retro gig posters, catalogues from long gone shops and old signs. He said: “We are asking people to check in their lofts and on their book shelves for anything Brighton and Sussex.

“There may not be massive money in it but we want the public come forward as they might be sitting on all sorts of strange and curious items.

“Even if it is three or four pounds, we just want to collate this stuff and bring it all together at this auction.”

He added it will be an opportunity for people to get in touch with the past – maybe spotting family members in old photos or seeing signs and pamphlets for shops long forgotten.

Mr Garth’s shop specialises in all kinds of vintage county memorabilia – featuring original ordinance survey maps, old gig posters and bills, a wealth of postcards, trophies won for West Pier talent contests and even pieces of the old Brighton Railway Station.

He said: “It is a big nostalgia and a big a personal thing.

“I have come across some quite unusual stuff.

“There used to be a yearly book called Kelly’s Directory, like a telephone directory but just with addresses, and they produced these from the 1700s onwards.

“We have a few and they are a big draw because people like to see where their relatives lived and they are quite difficult to come by now.”

He added: “We even have a hat shop bill dating from 1860 and a big Brighton laundry sign.

“I want to see West Pier stuff and old concert posters such as of Jimi Hendrix, Sex Pistols and programmes from The Beatles at the Hippodrome.”

To get involved in the auction and sell your Brighton, Hove and Sussex bits and pieces take them into Mr Garth’s shop at 28 Western Road, Hove or Mr Jeeves’ shop Step Back in Time, 36 Queen’s Road.

The date of the auction is September 23 and it will be held at St Leonard’s Church Hall, New Church Road, Hove.
