A HOSPITAL worker is taking on the English Channel.

Healthcare assistant Meg Roberts, who works at Hurstwood Park neurosciences centre in Haywards Heath, is in a five-person relay team. All money raised will go to Diabetes UK.

Ms Roberts said: “I have witnessed the difficulties of managing the condition as well as the traumatic effects that the disease can create if left untreated.

“I know that increased awareness and funding will directly improve the lifestyles of diabetics, including the possible prevention of developing further complications such as foot problems, cardiac disease and strokes.”

Ms Roberts has been undergoing a weekly regime of cardio and core exercises at the gym, swimming at a pool and in the sea and following a strict diet.

She said: “It will be a brilliant accomplishment but, for now, the training is gruelling and the coldness of the sea is fairly shocking.”

The challenge will take place between July 14 and July 19, depending on tides and weather.
