A man was treated for burns after putting out a fire in a bedroom.
Firefighters from Preston Circus were called to a house in Nanson Road, Coldean, Brighton, shortly before midnight last night.
The fire was already out when crews arrived but the bedroom had suffered some smoke damage.
It is not known exactly how the fire started.
The injured man, who was 21, was treated at the scene by paramedics.
A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "In this case te man was all right.
"However we would generally advise people when there is a fire to get out of the house, make sure everyone else is out and then call the fire brigade.
"If someone does suffer a burn like this, the quickest and best method is to get the burn under a cold tap and keep running cold water on it until the ambulance arrives."
