An MP has resigned from his ministerial role and will not seek re-election as an MP next year.

Bexhill and Battle MP Greg Barker has quit as Energy minister and will leave Parliament at the next general election.

The 48-year-old Worthing-born politician became MP for the area in 2001 and follows in the footsteps of fellow Sussex Conservative Mike Weatherley who announced he would not be standing for re-election to his Hove seat next May earlier this month.

It is understood that the MP told Prime Minister David Cameron of his decision at the weekend.

The MP tweeted as the news broke last night: β€œIt has been a huge honour to serve in pioneering 1st Cameron govt, & great privilege to represent #Bexhill&Battle.”

He added this morning: "As we all know Twitter can be a cruel mistress at times but have been really moved & surprised by so many lovely messages! #ThankYou."

Mr Barker is among a series of ministers leaving their posts with their replacements to be announced later today.

Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd, who was hotly-tipped to join number of female MPs in promotion, has indeed been elevated to the under secretary at the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
