A specially staged “boxing match” was held as a part of a protest against a major trade deal between the US and the EU.

More than 100 people turned up for the protest in the centre of Brighton on Saturday for the match, which pitched big business against citizens' rights.

The protest was supported by a coalition of several Brighton and Hove campaigning groups, including World Development Movement, Brighton and Hove Women Against the Cuts, Food Sovereignty Sussex, Frack Free Sussex, Brighton Left Unity and the Green Party.

Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas and MEP for the south east, Keith Taylor also attended.

Protestors say the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership threatens democracy, the environment and public services including the NHS.

They say it will give international corporations sweeping powers.

Mr Taylor said: “It is utterly outrageous that such a deal could enable corporations to sue governments over laws created in the public interest.”
