THE country’s leading co-educational school is set for an Olympian makeover after submitting plans for a new £10 million development.

Brighton College has submitted plans to the city council to demolish its swimming pool and old music school to build a five storey classroom block.

The plans are the latest phase of a multi-million pound investment which has already seen a new boarding house built at the school to cope with the rising number of pupils.

Next on the horizon will be the biggest project in the college’s history – an ambitious £40million “best sport and science facilities of any school in the country”.

The proposed new five-storey red brick building has been drawn up by esteemed architects Hopkins who designed the 2012 London Olympic Velodrome site as well as Glyndebourne Opera House, The Lawn Tennis Association National Centre and recent developments at both Princeton and Yale universities in America.

It is estimated the building of the new classroom block will generate 117 direct construction jobs and a further 177 indirect jobs in the wider area. The college says the work is needed to maintain its “world class” reputation.

The new building will have 22 classrooms to replace existing classrooms as well as a new classroom with “state of the art teaching equipment used for experimental lessons”.

The college said existing facilities do not meet the “current and future needs of the college”, with the current swimming pool considered too small.

It is one of several major construction projects currently at the college. Work on the sport and science block is anticipated to begin in June 2017.

The college’s recently completed boarding house has been long-listed for the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling prize.

Headteacher Richard Cairns said: “We have just been named by the Sunday Times as the most improved school in England over the last seven years but that has also seen our numbers go up by about 40%. We need to cater for this.

“We felt our priorities should be providing outstanding learning facilities for our pupils.

“We have very consciously worked with leading architects because we consider it important to bring top architecture to the city and develop the city in interesting ways.”

A decision on the plans is expected to be made by September 22.
