A man was left with two broken arms and a fractured skull after burglars broke into his house and attacked him while he was in bed.
The 48-year-old remains in hospital following the attack between 8am and 8.30am on July 8.
The victim was in bed at his house in Eaton Place, Brighton, when the pair broke in.
They then attacked him with a metal bar leaving him with two broken arms, a fractured skull and bruises to his body.
Detective constable Grant Hebblewhite said: "This would have been a busy time of morning with people travelling to work and school and we are appealing to anyone who saw two men in the area around 8am that morning.
"The suspects are described as two white men both between 40 and 50. One had blonde hair, had a large build and was wearing a yellow fluorescent jacket. The second man was smaller, slimmer with short shaven dark hair. It was the smaller man who used the iron bar on the victim.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 511 of 8/7. Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
