School children were given a fascinating insight into the horrors of the First World War at a special event this week.

Cartoonist Lalit Kumar Sharma showed Hove Park School students his illustrations of Indian soldiers being treated at the Royal Pavilion before Chattri chairman Davinder Dhillon read out letters from the troops.

Mr Dhillon said: β€œIt was a fantastic event and one that really brought the First World War to life.

β€œI was reading real letters from Indian soldiers in Brighton. It was quite emotional really.”

Mr Sharma, who has created a special cartoon strip as part of project to mark the centenary of the Great War, travelled to Brighton to show it to the students. The strip tells the story of two brothers who were treated in the Royal Pavilion.

The work is part of a special exhibition called 1914 Day by Day Cartoons which is on show at the Cartoon Museum in London. For more details visit www.1418now.org.uk/whats-on/1914-day-by-day-cartoons
