Met office issues warning of heavy rain expected to hit Sussex tonight

The Argus: Heavy rain expected to hit the county tonight Heavy rain expected to hit the county tonight

A warning of thunderstorms producing heavy rain in Sussex tonight has been issued by the Met Office.

The service is urging people to be prepared for heavy rain, expected to hit the county tonight between 9pm-11:45pm and carry on throughout Saturday.

This will bring an increased risk of flooding to localised areas.

It is expected that the weather will have cleared up by early Sunday morning but .

A spokesperson said: "Heavy, thundery downpours are expected to develop later on Friday evening across southern England.

"These are likely to be isolated initially but become more widespread overnight with the risk of some locally large rainfall totals giving rise to surface water flooding.

"Lightning, hail and gusty may also be added hazards.

"The public should be aware of the potential for localised disruption."

Glad to hear the heat wave's nearly over. It was a tough few hours but we seem to have got through it.
Will it now be wetter than Barbados?

Well that really depends on the circumstances; gusties on their own aren't usually too bad, but in combination with hail, lightning and heavy rain they can ceratinly be hazardous, and may indeed be deadly. Who can forget the terrible gusty of '73.....
Prepare for rain eh? Think I'll just stay indoors!

Well, the Met Office managed to inform BBC News 24 several hours before it occurred, because some of us were hoping it would hit Sussex much earlier to allow a decent night's kip.

Not raining?
Had a monsoon with thunder and lightning for most of the evening in Newhaven area. It's stopped now and got hot again but I'm going to try and sleep.
