A man from West Sussex has been found guilty of two counts of sexual offences against a girl under 13.

John David Manvell, 67, formally of Mill Road in Steyning, was found guilty of one count of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and one of sexual touching at Lewes Crown Court today.

Both counts were on a girl who was known to him and happened at his home between December 2013 and March this year.

Detective Constable Dani Flude said: "The victim was extremely brave when she spoke at his trial this week and we have been supporting her throughout.

"I am pleased that this case has been resolved with Manvell being found guilty of the two charges.

"We take reports of sexual offences very seriously and will make sure we do all we can to get justice for a victim.

"If anyone has any concerns about this kind of offence please speak to us."

Manvell has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on September 5.

Whilst I'm delighted that The Argus has reported this good news, I do wish its journalists would give more thought to their wording.

The second offence didn't happen today at court.

I do wish people wouldn't be so ignorant. Perhaps they need to look at both sides of the story. This is an innocent man who has done nothing wrong, but due to certain papers sensationalising other stories of a similar nature he was found guilty.

I totally agree, the ignorance of people - this is a gross miscarriage of justice which has torn apart a wonderful loving family. There are a great deal of people behind you John!!!!!! the truth will come out Lets hope its sooner rather than later, but in the meantime I'll be supporting the Manvells all the way!

I can't believe there is so much concern for Mr Manvell and his so called "wonderful family", what about the poor little girl and her family? My heart goes out to them. I would expect his friends and family to stick by him but I think the rest of us can see this situation for what it is. There is no smoke without fire and I think it is ignorant to just dismiss this little girl's word against a 67 year old man just because people think they know him. It is a relief that for now this man is where he should be.
