A retired man has been given a restraining order for harassing his neighbours for three years because of their sexuality.

Rex Northover subjected his neighbours in Sanctuary Lane, Storrington, to a campaign of intimidation which included continuously staring into their home, beeping his car horn, braking his car suddenly in front of his neighbours as they walked the dog.

The final incident involved the 67-year-old homophobically abusing one of them in public.

Northover was given a 12 month restraining order, preventing him from contacting his two victims, and has been ordered to pay a £400 fine, a victim surcharge of £40 and costs of £85 when he appeared at Worthing Magistrates' Court last week.

Sergeant Peter Allan, Sussex Police hate crime sergeant, said: "Both victims state they feel they were targeted because of Northover's prejudice towards their sexuality.

"I am pleased this case is over and that the victims can get on with their lives without the constant fear of having to look over their shoulders.”
