An investigation has been launched after three opportunistic burglaries were reported in the same seaside town within the space of four days.

Two of the incidents, which took place in St Leonards, happened on Friday July 18 when two seperate intruders were found women's bedrooms.

At 4.10am a woman awoke at her home in Sedlescombe Road North to find a man in her bedroom.

She challenged him and he fled empty-handed.

The intruder was white, 6', slim and bald.

Later that day at 12.50pm a woman living in Albany Road and who had gone to bed feeling unwell also woke to find a man in her room.

On being seen he fled, but it was later found he had stolen the woman's jewellery.

He was tall, in his 20s and had dark hair.

On Tuesday July 15 at 11.30pm a woman living in Spring Street in St Leonards was disturbed by noises at her front door, as if someone was trying to break in.

She saw a shadowy figure through the glass panel but the person then left and no further disturbance was caused.

Inspector Chris Veale, of Hastings Neighbourhood Police Team, said: " Each of these reports is disturbing. To wake up and find someone in your house is a shock.

"However. I would reassure the community that none of the women was threatened and each of them has been seen by officers. House-to-house enquiries have been made in each locality."

Insp Veale added: "I'd like to remind all householders to take extra care during hot weather. It is tempting to leave windows or doors open, but these are sadly an invitation to opportunistic burglars.

"If you hear strange noises outside or think that you may have an intruder, don't hesitate to call police immediately by phoning 999."

Operation Magpie was launched by Sussex Police to tackle and deter burglaries.
