How long did it take for the fire service to 'assess' the situation?

It is now 5.20pm. They've allowed the fire to worsen. Pathetic. With that sea water too.

As soon as a fire reaches a certain temperature, it doesn't matter how much water you dump on it, it will evaporate before it takes any effect! And with all that timber there to be burned, I'd imagine it spread pretty quickly!

Nothing annoys me more when people that put their lives on the line to save others are criticised.

It appears nobody has been injured! That for me says the fire brigade and every one concerned have done a fantastic job! Buildings can be replaced! Lives cannot!

That first bit was the main amusement arcade - full of slot machines and penny falls and those machines where you put 50p in and have to control a claw to try and pick up a cuddly toy.
I always found it too noisy in there.

Perhaps a sprinkler system would have helped minimise the damage.
With a mostly wooden structure I would have thought this would have been an insurance condition?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing though - lets hope it can be rebuilt to its former glory.

Same old posters making a dig at a certain company that owns another Sussex Pier....very sad. Don't forget said company turned down the opportunity to buy Eastbourne Pier and would like to sell the Pier they already own. Plus said company have installed a fire supression system in the large arcade and restaurant to prevent this happening on their Pier, (lets hope it never has to be used)

Glad to hear no one was injured and hope the Pier can be restored to it's former glory, (steel work underneath does look like it wasn't damaged to badly). Eastbourne needs it's Pier.
