A hotel is set to check out after 150 years and be transformed into 45 new homes.

Proposals to transform the Lansdowne Place Hotel in Hove into one and two-bedroom apartments look set to be given the go ahead at a council planning meeting this week.

The plans have split local opinion, with some civic groups keen to see the former hotel redeveloped before it falls into disrepair and becomes an “eyesore”.

But residents are concerned about the over development of the site.

The hotel closed in December 2012 leaving 20 full-time staff out of work and administrators KPMG say it is no longer viable to maintain the building as a working hotel.

A number of changes to the scheme have been added since it was first made public in January, including an additional storey to the main roof, the demolition of the kitchen and ballroom areas at the rear and the construction of five houses around a landscaped courtyard.

Fourteen residents and ward councillor Ollie Sykes have objected to the plans claiming the new building does not fit in with surrounding buildings and the flats are undersized. Lansdowne Area Residents Association, The Friends of Palmeira and Adelaide Residents Association and Hove Civic Society have all given their reserved backing to the plans, supporting much-needed regeneration but questioning the quality of the proposals.
