Travellers have moved from one park in Sompting to another.

Yesterday, about 15 caravans were in Halewick Park in Sompting, with residents saying the encampment was preventing children from playing on the green space.

Last night travellers moved on to Lyons Farm Open Space in Sompting Road Park, Worthing, at about 9.30pm, according to one resident.

Like the residents near Halwick Park, he said he feared his children would be unable to use the space.

The council said 16 caravans have been reported there.

A spokeswoman for Adur and Worthing Councils said: "A welfare audit has been conducted and a decision has been taken by Legal Services not to tolerate."

A notice of direction has been served for the travellers to leave today.

If they do not, the council will have to decide whether to issue a summons to obtain a court order.

The spokeswoman added: "The police are currently on site and are considering using their powers under section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994."

Travellers were also reported on Victoria Park in Worthing and Greensward on Goring seafront.

In the latter case they have now left the site.

Sussex Police said officers held a street briefing with residents and businesses after the latest Sompting incursion and are assessing the site.
