Historic hotel to be brought back to life as apartment block

First published in News

A historic but disused hotel will be brought back into use as housing for up to 45 families, couples or individuals.

The Lansdowne Place Hotel’s 150 year stay as a hotel in Hove is set to end after Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to approve plans for one and two bedroom flats on the site.

The hotel closed in December 2012 leaving 20 full-time staff out of work and administrators KPMG say it is no longer viable to maintain the building as a working hotel.

Planning committee members said they were pleased that a disused building would be brought back into use but several, including planning chairman Phelim MacCafferty and fellow Green councillor Ian Davey, expressed disappointment at the loss of a much-loved hotel in Hove.

Several councillors also spoke out against proposals that would see a storey of penthouse flats added to the building.

What a dismal shame, and we wonder why parking is now such a nightmare, that will be potentially 45 or 90 more cars looking for parking.

Surely some business must have eyed it up as a hotel, it was beautiful inside. What a complete waste.

Yet another bad decision by the current council. Surely there must be many better uses for this building than unimaginatively just converting it to flats or could this be another alleged backhander between the council and developers?

Exactly, and notice the thumbs down already, I reckon the councillors must visit this site as no one in their right mind could do anything but agree with what we are saying!

Its in Hove is it not. What's wrong with turning it into muli-milliion pound apartments. Room to park in the converted ground floor and cellar.
You don't want the Students or Economic Migrants in hove.

If keeping it as a hotel was such a good idea, why has nobody come forward in the last 18 months to do just that?

Don't like the idea much but if no-one will run it as an hotel, surely this is better than leaving it empty or building houses on green space?

I remember when it was the Dudley Hotel and it was very elegant inside. Then it was taken over by Trust House Forte and rapidly declined. it certainly looks very drab now. But I am surprised that one of the hotel chains is not interested in buying it, as the location is marvellous.

How on earth do you know who has come forward to express an interest? This council are only interested in back handers, not whats right for the city.

Get your facts right, the car parking will allow for 10 cars in a building with 45 flats, you do the maths

Have you seen the derelict **** buildings around brighton and hove, convert these to flats/housing, why change one of the grandest hotels we have into yet more bloody flats.
