Police bosses stepped out as they joined their bobbies on the beat.

Around 80 officers took part in Sussex Police's 'All Out Day' on August 8 swapping their usual places of work to join colleagues in more visible roles across the county.

Deputy Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney said: "I am delighted with the enthusiasm and energy shown by all those who joined Operation Maximum, working alongside their colleagues to execute drugs warrants, recover stolen property, assist with burglary investigations and getting out to help road policing officers keeping Sussex a safe place for drivers and other road users.

"I joined a road policing unit carrying out static roadside checks in Haywards Heath, where we saw one arrest for drink-driving.

"Operation Dragonfly has been working to specifically target drink and drug driving across Sussex and several of us were able to refresh our skills and increase our understanding of this important area of policing.

"Op Maximum also saw a number of other arrests with property being recovered from burglaries and significant seizures of cash, drugs and a firearm in Crawley."

PC Andy Foster is normally based at Sussex Police HQ in Lewes in the Police Federation office.

He said: "I haven't been on the streets for four years and this was a valuable reminder of the frustrations my colleagues have to face on a daily basis.

"It was a very worthwhile and rewarding experience, a great idea and I look forward to it being repeated."

DCC Pinkney concluded: "There has been really good feedback from both sides with officers taking part relishing the opportunity to refresh their skills in areas of policing they wouldn't normally work in. We plan to repeat the operation in the next few weeks."
