A traffic jam snaked its way back down a major route as a car ran out of fuel.

Commuters travelling eastbound on the A27 were met with heavy traffic when they passed Hollingbury as they ran into extended queues this morning.

The delays were all the result of one car running out of the fuel and the consequent efforts to recover it.

The knock on effect left cars trailing back along the road until the stricken vehicle was towed away at 9.10am.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "At 8.40am on Wednesday a car ran out of fuel on the eastbound A27 at Hollingbury and there were consequent talibacks. It was towed away by 9.10am."
