A major search was launched following reports a kite surfer had got into difficulties off the Sussex coast.
Solent coastguard received several 999 calls from people on Saturday evening about the man, who was spotted in the Bognor area.
The coastguard helicopter, Littlehampton coastguard and the Selsey RNLI crew were called out and searched the coast and sea between Pagham and
Bognor.
But no trace of the man was found and the search was eventually called off.
A coastguard spokesman said the man was believed to have managed to make his own way back to shore.
