A MEMORIAL stone will be unveiled to honour a World War One hero who became the first recipient of Britain’s highest award for bravery.
Private Sidney Godley VC single-handedly defended the Nimy Railway Bridge, Belgium, against the German Army during the Battle of Mons on August 23 1914, so his comrades could escape.
He was captured after running out of ammunition, and held prisoner of war until 1918 when guards fled their posts.
One hundred years later on August 23, his memorial stone will be laid on the top step of the War Memorial in his native town of East Grinstead.
Town centre roads will be closed between 10.15am and midday. Town mayor Nick Hodges will welcome guests at 10.55am.
The Band of the Royal Logistic Corps will leave Kings Street car park at 10.40am to march up London Road and into High Street.
