A man who set himself on fire in front of horrified onlookers in a busy street has been jailed.

Rosario Cernera, 47, of no fixed address, doused himself in liquid and set himself alight in Hove Street, Hove, on May 6.

After he was discharged from a specialist burns unit at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead on August 11 he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on August 12 for breaching a restraining order.

A spokeswoman from Sussex Police said: “Rosario Cernera appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday August 12 where he pleaded guilty to an offence of breach of a restraining order on May 6 and was sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment plus a further consecutive 12 weeks for breach of a previous restraining order which had previously been suspended.”
